Praying Mantis for Sale
Nymphs, adults and oothecae from US mantis breeders.
Praying mantids are interactive, short-lived and endlessly watchable, which makes them a favorite first predator. The ghost mantis (Phyllocrania paradoxa), spiny flower mantis (Pseudocreobotra wahlbergii), giant Asian mantis (Hierodula) and the orchid mantis (Hymenopus coronatus) are the hobby staples, alongside dead-leaf mantids (Deroplatys) and African Sphodromantis.
Mantids are sold as nymphs by instar (L1, L2, L3 and so on), as sub-adults or adults, and sometimes as oothecae (egg cases) that hatch dozens of nymphs. Early instars are cheap but need tiny prey like fruit flies and springtails; L3 and up are easier for a first mantis. Females live longer and get larger than males.
Some non-native mantis species require USDA permits, so breeders on this site list the species they are permitted to sell. Nymphs ship overnight in ventilated cups with a perch, and most sellers offer a live arrival guarantee when you are home for delivery. Compare the breeders below, then check their profile for current instars in stock.

Praying Mantis FAQ
What do L1, L2 and L3 mean?
Instar stages: L1 is a freshly hatched nymph, and each molt adds one. Most species reach adulthood around L7–L9. L3 and older nymphs are the easiest start.
What do praying mantis nymphs eat?
Flightless fruit flies for early instars, then house flies, blue bottle flies and small roaches or crickets as they grow.
How long does a praying mantis live?
Typically six months to a year from hatching, with females outliving males. Adults usually live two to four months after their final molt.
