African Giant Millipede (Archispirostreptus gigas) - 5-8" (Medium-Large WC)
A foot of glossy black armor, and the gentlest giant in the hobby Archispirostreptus gigas, the African Giant Black Millipede, is the largest millipede on Earth: a smooth, glossy-black cylinder up to a foot long, rippling forward on hundreds of tiny legs in slow, hypnotic waves. It comes from the coastal forests of East Africa, where it spends its days quietly recycling fallen leaves and rotting wood. Watch one move and you will lose a few minutes to it. That legwork is genuinely mesmerizing. This is the most low-stress big invert going, and a longtime beginner favorite: no venom, no bite, and famously docile. Its only defense is to curl into a tight coil and seep a mild, almond-scented irritant, so wash your hands after handling. It lives 7 to 10+ years, does great in groups, and basically eats its own home: a deep bed of hardwood leaf litter is the entire feeding plan. The care guide has the full bioactive setup.
