Females top an inch in body length and carry a thick, businesslike legspan. She spins no web. At night she runs prey down on foot, like a tiny wolf on the forest floor. The showstopper is the motherhood. A gravid female glues her egg sac to her spinnerets, then hauls dozens of spiderlings on her back for a couple of weeks after they hatch, one of the coolest things you will ever watch in an enclosure. She is fast and best kept hands-off, but she is hardy, cheap to feed, and endlessly watchable, a real piece of backyard North America for a beginner keeper.
