It looks like the most dangerous thing in the room, and it is very nearly the safest. Damon variegatus, the African Whip Scorpion, is an amblypygid: a tailless whip spider, and neither a scorpion nor a spider. The raptorial pedipalps fold in front like a mantis's forelegs, and one pair of legs is rebuilt into long, thread-thin feelers that sweep the space ahead of it. These arrived field-collected at roughly 3 to 5 inches across with the legs extended. That is a leg span, not a body length: measured body length for the species runs 23.2 to 33.4 mm. The safe part is real. Amblypygids have no venom glands and spin no silk. The pedipalps can pinch mechanically, and the legs are delicate enough to detach under stress, so transfers happen with a catch cup rather than a hand.
